Hans von Marées
1837 - 1887
Weibliche sitzende Figur, zwei Rückenakte, mehrere Kinder und verso: Weibliche sitzende Figur, drei Kinder, liegender männlicher Akt. Wohl um 1880/1885.
Sanguine.
On brownish wove paper. 51.7 x 44 cm (20.3 x 17.3 in), size of sheet. [EH].
The red chalk drawing on the reverse side picks up on the group of figures consisting of the woman with the two children, varies the surrounding figures, and places the depiction in a suggested architectural setting with a landscape background.

• Figure studies such as these are key to understanding his entire oeuvre.
• Particularly large-format sheet.
Hans von Marées' drawings combine classical tradition with a visionary approach to modern art
.

PROVENANCE: Pallenberg Collection, Rome.
Galerie Arnoldi-Livie, Munich.
Private collection Günther Förg.

In good condition. The paper is browned overall. The upper corners of the sheet have small areas of paper loss on each side. Carefully smoothed creases and wrinkles are visible in the lower left corner of the sheet and along the left edge.
For information concerning the condition, please view the high resolution image / backside image.
