Franz Marc
1880 - 1916
Versöhnung. 1912.
Woodcut.
Monogrammed, handwritten title and numbered in the printing block, as well as inscribed by Maria Marc “From the estate of Franz Marc, confirmed by Maria Marc.” On the reverse, inscribed again by Maria Marc “Estate of Franz Marc, confirmed by Maria Marc.”. One of probably 15 copies. On Japan paper. 20 x 25.8 cm (7.8 x 10.1 in). Sheet: 26,5 x 38,7 cm (10,23 x 14,96 in).
In a letter to Herwarth Walden dated August 23, 1912, Franz Marc describes the woodcut as an attempt to illustrate Else Lasker-Schüler's poem “Versöhnung” (Reconciliation). The artist also promises to send Walden the woodblock for his magazine “Der Sturm” as well as several prints. The woodcut actually adorns the cover of the weekly magazine in September 1912, Vol. III, Number 125/26. [MH].

• Expressive woodcut from Marc's very small graphic oeuvre.
• In September 1912, the woodcut adorned the cover of the weekly magazine “Der Sturm.”
• Together with Wassily Kandinsky, Marc was the founder of the artist group “Der Blaue Reiter” (The Blue Rider)
.
