Blaudistel. 1962.
Watercolor.
Inscribed with the work number "6281" in the lower right. Dated, titled and inscribed with the work number on the reverse. On Schoeller wove paper (with the truncated blindstamp). 49.8 x 69.9 cm (19.6 x 27.5 in), the full sheet. [CH].

• With a cool palette and a close-up perspective, Schmidt-Rottluff combines the appealing shape of the spiky thistle with the cloudy sky and the linear window cross to create a dynamic, abstract yet atmospheric composition.
• In 1964, the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt am Main, the Kunstverein Hanover, the Museum Folkwang in Essen and the Akademie der Künste in Berlin honored him with a grand traveling exhibition.
• The technique of watercolor painting is of pivotal importance for Schmidt-Rottluff's creative work: from the years of the “Brücke” to his late works, watercolor painting dominates the oeuvre of the great Expressionist
.

PROVENANCE: Private collection Lower Saxony.
Private collection Lower Saxony (inherited from the above).

Dynamic composition. In good condition. The sheet is minimally wavy owing to the technique. The left and upper sheet edges are slightly irregular.Verso along the sheet margins circumferentially with some mounting residue and fragments of adhesive paper tape, minimally protruding on the recto at the upper sheet edge. A few tiny pressure marks in the sheet's lower corner and margin.
