• With a cool palette and a close-up perspective, Schmidt-Rottluff combines the appealing shape of the spiky thistle with the cloudy sky and the linear window cross to create a dynamic, abstract yet atmospheric composition.
• In 1964, the Frankfurter Kunstverein in Frankfurt am Main, the Kunstverein Hanover, the Museum Folkwang in Essen and the Akademie der Künste in Berlin honored him with a grand traveling exhibition.
• The technique of watercolor painting is of pivotal importance for Schmidt-Rottluff's creative work: from the years of the “Brücke” to his late works, watercolor painting dominates the oeuvre of the great Expressionist.
