• The dynamic and energetic brushwork is rooted in the Berlin years during World War I.
• In the winter of 1915/16, E. L. Kirchner spent several weeks in Dr. Kohnstamm's clinic in Königstein im Taunus, returning in the spring of the same year to work on a commission for the design of the Brunnenhaus.
• The same year also saw the creation of the closely related paintings “Bahnhof in Königstein” (Gordon 469) and “Eisenbahn im Taunus” (Gordon 470, Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich).
This work is documented in the Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Archive, Wichtrach/Bern.
