PROVENANCE: Private collection Hanover (since 2005, Bassenge).

LITERATURE: Bassenge, Berlin, 87th auction on April 27, 2006, lot 6643.

"..And it is no coincidence that such a completely different nature as Markus Lüpertz, the man with the painter's fist, refers quite openly to formal elements of the Rhenish Italian-German [Werner Gilles], who had found his second home in Sant-Angelo.." Karl Ruhrberg wrote this in the introduction to the exhibition catalog "Werner Gilles" (May 8 - August 8, 1987) at Galerie Vömel Düsseldorf. Our sheet in particular makes this comparison very comprehensible and shows the modernity Werner Gilles has found in his oeuvre.
