Serge Poliakoff Serge Poliakoff - Biography
Serge Poliakoff counts among the most important representative of 20th century abstract art. Born in Moscow, his artistic creation would come to full bloom in the bustling artist metropolis Paris, where Serge Poliakoff was in fruitful contact with, among others, the artist couple Delaunay. It is particularly his early works that show strong notions of the art of the Dutch "De Stijl" and Cubism. However, Serge Poliakoff soon overcame these early normative structures and attained the autonomous, at times geometrical edgy forms that are wedged inside one another, adding up like puzzle pieces, and spreading all over the entire canvas. The coloring of each painting is deliberately reduced to a few matching colors, often in luscious tones.
A great number of awards, one-man shows, among others, in the Museum Würth in Künzelsau and in the Kunsthalle of the Hypo-Kulturstiftung in Munich as well as several participations in the documenta deliver proof of the rank of Serge Poliakoff's art.
