Samuel J. Herman
The multi-faceted and versatile Heinz Mack counts among the most important artists of the 20th century.
The oeuvre of Heinz Mack, who founded the group ZERO together with Otto Piene in 1957, is dominated by one and the same topic, regardless the genre it is depicted in: Light. Both the strongly coloristic as well as the monochrome works by Heinz Mack revolve around light and its energetic effects. This phenomenon is depicted in numerous works that often call reminiscence of Kinetic Art and Op Art: (moving) light sculptures, sculptures of reflecting materials, in painting Mack made the "Dynamic Structures" in the ZERO years. His later period was dominated by large size "chromatic constellations" in strong colors. Additionally, he made abstract photography, graphic art, stage designs and mosaics.
The highly praised Heinz Mack, awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2004, has been honored in some 300 one-man shows. His works are in possession of many renowned museums.
