Next to Lovis Corinth and Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt is regarded one of the protagonists of Impressionism in Germany. Even though Impressionim in Germany began a little later than in its homeland France, Max Slevogt's paintings were always committed to the impressionist style. With their brilliant coloring and their virtuous, spontaneous and easy stroke of the brush they reveal the artist's poised manner. AS far as motifs are concerned, Max Slevogt had a preference for portraits, particular for roll portraits, flowers and landscapes. Furthermore, Max Slevogt worked up the impressions of his journeys, for instance to Egypt, in his works. The oeuvre of graphic art is just as extensive, besides drawings, lithographs and etchings it also comprises book illustrations.
