Art (1945-contemporary) > Figurative Painting (70s - contemporary) Gerhard Richter - Biography

Kerze I. 1988.
Offset in colors.
Signed. From an edition of 250 copies. On thin wove paper. 88.7 x 94.3 cm (34.9 x 37.1 in), the full sheet.
Printed by Kirschbaum Laserscan, Düsseldorf. Published by Verein zur Förderung moderner Kunst e. V. (at the Mönchehaus-Museum für moderne Kunst), Goslar.
The print is based on a photograph of the oil painting ‘Kerze’ (Candle) from 1982 (Butin 512-1), however, mirror-inverted. Richter originally used the motif for the poster (not an artist's poster) printed with white writing for his solo exhibition at the Mönchehaus Museum for Modern Art in Goslar in 1988. [MH].
• An iconic motif in Richter's work with a large-format signature.
• Inspired by his oil painting ‘Kerze’, which was sold in London in 2015 for €12 million.
• The artist elevates photomechanical reproduction techniques, which are predominant in his editions, to a contemporary means of expression on a par with classical printing techniques.
