Woodcut.
On brownish mold made paper (with the watermark). 63.6 x 45.2 cm (25 x 17.7 in). Sheet: 69,8 x 59 cm (27,4 x 23,2 in).

• One of only two known copies.
• Erich Heckel used the motif of his famous woodcut “Männerbildnis” (Portrait of a Man) from 1919 for this poster.
• The head and hands emphasize the sitter's asceticism in his gaze and posture.
• A masterpiece of expressionist woodcuts
.

PROVENANCE: Galerie Ilse Schweinsteiger, Munich.
Private collection Hesse (from the above in 1989).

LITERATURE: Renate Ebner, Andreas Gabelmann, Erich Heckel. Catalogue Raisonné of Prints, Vol. 2: 1914-1968, Munich 2021, no. 761 H I (of II).
Annemarie and Wolf-Dieter Dube, Erich Heckel. Das graphische Werk, vol. 1: Holzschnitte, New York 1964, cat. rais. no. H 324.

Good overall impression consistent with the age. Relined. Part of the lower left corner of the image and a small area at the left margin of the sheet professionally restored and retouched. A few tiny creases at the edge of the sheet that have been professionally backed. Overall, creased and with light crease marks and some faint rubbing.
