• As a member of the abstract painters' group “Zen 49”, Thieler was also associated with Fritz Winter, Willi Baumeister and Rupprecht Geiger

PROVENANCE: Private collection, Berlin.
Private collection, Rhineland-Palatinate (inherited from the above in 1989).

“For me, being a painter means living the life of a man of our times who spends the greater part of his existence trying to express his life's impulses – be they inspiration or depression, intuition or rational deliberation, reactions to individual experiences or chains of experiences – in paint, or to gain insights into these impulses through the act of painting. For me, painting means registering the analogies and differences of experience and bringing forth a product that, released from the painting process, presents itself and offers itself as a reflection of human existential experience, both to the viewer and to the painter. Thus, to me, painting seems to be a process whose essence is exploratory action - exploratory action as the result of open analysis.”
Fred Thieler, Zu meiner Arbeit, in: Andrea Firmenich, Jörn Merkert, Sigrid Melchior, Fred Thieler. Monographie und Werksverzeichnis. Bilder von 1942-1993, Cologne 1995, p. 68.
