G-1/1960. 1960.
Gouache, partly scratched, on packing paper.
Bottom center signed and dated. 57 x 44.3 cm (22.4 x 17.4 in). [JS].

• Characteristic early work by the protagonist of German Informalism.
• Schumacher masterfully succeeds in transferring the plasticity of his paintings, in which he stages color as matter on the canvas, to the medium of paper.
• Both the structure of the crumpled wrapping paper and the impasto white paint application with its furrow-like incisions create a fascinating haptic presence.
• Reduced modern aesthetics of calligraphic delicacy and lightness
.

The work is documented in the artist's archive. We are grateful to Mr. Rouven Lotz, Emil Schumacher Museum, Hagen, for his kind support in cataloging this lot.

PROVENANCE: Galerie Walter Bischoff, Stuttgart.
Private collection Baden-Württemberg (acquired from the above in 1992).

In good condition. Edges irregular due to the technique.
For information concerning the condition, please view the high resolution image / backside image.
