Horst Antes Horst Antes - Biography
The German painter, graphic artist and sculptor Horst Antes gained world fame as a renovator of figuration after 1945.
A student of HAP Grieshaber, Horst Antes came into contact with the figurative post-war avant-garde as early as in the 1950s, back then the artists sought answers regarding a new figuration in the days of abstraction. Horst Antes found a completely independent solution: The "Kopffüßler" [Head Footer], an imaginative creature consisting of a huge profile head, without neck and body on two legs, has dominated his works since 1962. With this figure Horst Antes created an allegory of a stereotyped man between myth and mechanization.
Numerous honors and single exhibitions in renowned museums such as the Sprengel Museum in Hanover or the 'Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen' in Munich are proof of the great recognition the multiple documenta participant Horst Antes receives up until today.
