Herbert Bayer Herbert Bayer - Biography
Herbert Bayer counts among the most influential painters and graphic artists of the 20th century. His creative potential should particular come to show in applied arts: After Herbert Bayer had successfully completed his studies at the Bauhaus, he led the print shop at the Dessau Bauhaus. But also after his time at the Bauhaus Herbert Bayer remained true to applied arts, particularly typography and advertising. In 1938 Herbert Bayer emigrated to the USA, where he worked, among others, as exhibition designer and managed to tie in with earlier success. On the one hand his oeuvre pursues geometrical-abstract tendencies, as his commercial art, paintings or prints, especially silkscreens, illustrate. On the other hand he worked up surrealist influences in paintings and in photographs. Herbert Bayer's artistic oeuvre was honored with numerous international art prizes and an honorary doctorate of the Technische Universität Graz.
