Among the world's most renowned artists Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn definitely occupies one of the front ranks. He is regarded a master of Dutch baroque. Trained by Jacob van Swanenburgh and Pieter Lastman, Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn should soon become a successful portraitist of the Amsterdam upper class. It was not before the 1630s that Rembrandt began to paint historical scenes and group portraits, e.g. the painting "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" (1632). His numerous self portraits, with which Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn captured the lifelong analysis of the ego on canvas, are also coined by a psychological inwardness. Besides an impressive oeuvre of paintings, he also created poised etchings and drawings.
