Hans Purrmann Hans Purrmann - Biography
Hans Purrmann's extraordinary artistic talent was encouraged from an early point on, as even before he studied art in Karlsruhe and Munich, he had received training from his father, a decoration painter. The art of Hans Purrmann came to full bloom in the pulsating artists metropolis Paris, where he had moved to in 1905 after he had completed his studies. This was where he encountered works by Henri Matisse, André Derain and Paul Cézanne, which would not only become important sources of inspiration, but also his collector items. In this context he made still lifes, portraits and landscapes, which are so striking because of their structured image concept, their lucent and merry coloring and their bold stroke of the brush. Hans Purrmann, who lived in Berlin as of 1916, in Italy as of 1935 and since 1943 in Switzerland, was given honorary citizenship of his hometown Speyer in 1950.
