Gerhard Marcks counts among the most important German sculptors of the 20th century. Gerhard Marcks gained his outstanding sculpting talent as an auto-didact. His own artistic style stands in the tradition of the great Ernst Barlach, as Gerhard Marcks created eloquent figures, which are, with their both reduced and yet sensitively raised body language, striking witnesses of history. Besides eloquent sculptures, Gerhard Marcks also created an impressive lot of drawings and print art. Another field of life-long activity was teaching, Gerhard Marcks taught, among others, at the Bauhaus, the Halle school 'Burg Giebichenstein' and at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg.
