Georg Tappert Georg Tappert - Biography
The impressive oeuvre of the expressionist Georg Tappert was only rediscovered long after he had died. Today, even if a little belated, it receives its deserved acknowledgement.
After his studies Georg Tappert went to Worpswede, where he came into contact with early Expressionism. Based on the experience gained in Worpswede, Tappert successfully found his way to Expressionism in Berlin around 1910. He had attained a large-scale style dominated by strong contours and intensive colors. In terms of topics, Georg Tappert's paintings and graphic works focus on urban nightlife with cabaret singers, nude dancers and prostitutes, who populate these subtle genre scenes, portraits and nudes.
The founding member of the "Novembergruppe" was forced to hide his works from the National Socialists. The late rediscovery of Georg Tappert began only in 1980 with the first monography, large exhibitions such as a retrospective in 2005 (Schleswig and Nuremberg) and the show "Georg Tappert. Frauen 1910-1933" (Bonn and Bayreuth, 2008/2009) followed.
