Emil Nolde Emil Nolde - Biography
Emil Nolde counts among the most important artist personalities of German Expressionism. Born in the town of Nolde in 1867 under the name Hans Emil Hansen, he later adopted the name of his town of birth. After an early period of creation coined by a rather impressionist style, the expressionist tendencies in the work of Emil Nolde, most likely inspired by the artist group "Die Brücke" of which he was a member, would come to full bloom. His landscapes and portraits as well as the religious subjects captivate the observer with their luscious coloring and a both free and poised stroke of the brush. Lucent and strong watercolors complete the multi-faceted range of works by Emil Nolde.
Today the amount of exhibitions that have honored the art of Emil Nolde, which was defamed as 'degenerate' by the National Socialists, is uncountable. Emil Nolde, who was awarded the order "Pour le mérite for Science and Arts", died in Seebüll, where today the "Foundation Seebüll Ada and Emil Nolde" attends to the artist's estate.
