Emil Maetzel

Emil Maetzel - painter, graphic artist and architect - counts among the most important artist personalities of the 20th century. As far as architecture is concerned, Emil Maetzel is a representative of the functional "Modern Architecture". Just as modern are paintings and graphic works by Emil Maetzel, who counts among the protagonists of the "Hamburgische Sezession" [Hamburg Secession], which he had founded together with his wife Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen. With notions of Expressionim and African art, Emil Maetzel created paintings, woodcuts, etchings, watercolors and drawings that show man as their preferred subject. All in harmony with expressionist style tendencies, the artist favors expressive colors over the loal coloring, his imagery is characterized by an edgy and strict use of forms and bold perspectives. Works by Emil Maetzel have been in the focus of numerous exhibitions and can be found in renowned collections.
