Eduard Bargheer Eduard Bargheer - Biography
Eduard Bargheer is an artist of international rank, after 1945 he took Expressionism to a poetic world of dream-like images.
The Hamburg native, member of the local Secession and in close contact with the famous art historians Erwin Panofsky and Aby Warburg, had discovered his love for Italy from an early point on. In 1939 Eduard Bargheer finally settled in his desired country and mostly lived on Ischia.
There Eduarg Bargheer's style developed from his expressionist early period to a lyrical maturity. His works, now mostly watercolors of landscapes in light translucent colors and hovering between figuration and Abstraction, put Eduard Bargheer aside artists such as Paul Klee and Werner Gilles.
Among the numerous exhibitions of works by Eduard Bargheer, the large retrospective on occasion of his 100th birthday is particularly worthwhile mentioning. It was shown in 2002 as a travelling exhibition in the 'Stiftung Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloss Gottorf', the Hamburg Kunsthalle and the 'Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte' in Münster.
