Bernhard Lokai
Bernard Lokai counts among the most important contemporary artists in Germany. Educated as master student of Gerhard Richter at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, his early works oscillated between color field painting and gestural abstraction spiked with fragments of symbols. In the 1990s Bernard Lokai created spontaneous atmospheric depleted landscapes in an earthen coloring with traces of black. They unfold their contemplative powers between a scant ground and a wide horizon. Even though he remained true to the landscape motif in the late 1990s, the color palette becomes lighter in general, and formations of nature take up more image space. The most recent formations seem to increasingly turn to abstraction once more and delicate, almost romantically transfigured cloud images complete the spectrum. It is particularly the latest works by Bernard Lokai - abstract renderings that have been cast onto the canvas with powerful strokes of the brush - show the observer a peculiar force. In this context the works by Bernard Lokai keep their unique potential for artistic renewal and high artistic quality.
