Bernard Schultze, who died in 2005, was one of the most individual and outstanding artist personalities of the German Informel.
Co-founder of the artist group 'Quadriga', its early works were destroyed in World War II, attained his individual lyrical abstract style in 1951 after a surrealist period. Bernard Schultze's unmistakable style shows clear traces of his surrealist roots: In his small-sized compositions in strong colors he conjured up innumerable figurative-surreal associations, so that the works of Bernard Schultze seem like an exuberantly proliferating fantastic parallel world. Besides paintings graphic art, Bernard Schultze also created three-dimensional works.
The multiple documenta participant Bernard Schultze (documenta II, III and VI), whose works are in possession of numerous internationally renowned museums, has already been honored with comprehensive retrospectives, such as the exhibition "Im Labyrinth" (Düsseldorf et al, 1980).
