Adolf Hölzel Adolf Hölzel - Biography

Adolf Hölzel counts among the most innovative German artists of the 19th and 20th century, as paving the paths to abstraction was the outstanding merit of Adolf Hölzel. Adolf Hölzel, who belonged to the protagonists of the 'New Dachau' artists, masterly attained a gradual abstraction from a style that was initially geared at impressionist models. Adolf Hölzels also particularly valued color, as he was intensively occupied with teachings regarding color harmony. Referencing Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, he achieved ground-breaking results that would later on influence Bauhaus teachings.
Paintings and graphic works by Adolf Hölzel, which are in possession of renowned museums such as the 'Staatsgalerie Stuttgart', are characterized by a masterly employment of form and color, the colorful basic geometric surfaces make for expressive and yet harmonious compositions.
