The Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki is regarded as one of the main representatives of the "Nouvelle Ecole de Paris".
When living in China Zao Wou-Ki was already examining the art of Paul Klee, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, and when he emigrated to Paris in 1948, he became one of the most innovative artists. In his works he tied in with the pre-war avant-garde "New Parisian School". His oeuvre of painting and graphic works, which would soon follow a path of abstraction, is characterized by an effective synthesis: Elements of East Asian calligraphy meet lyrical landscape art and tachist-gestic abstraction. A highly poetic, aesthetically refined imagery in a sensitive coloring are the result.
Zao Wou-Ki, who was honored with a large retrospective in the Essen Museum Folkwang and the Albertina in Vienna in 1965, is represented in many international collections.
