Wilhelm Lehmbruck Wilhelm Lehmbruck - Biography
Wilhelm Lehmbruck doubtlessly is one of the most important German sculptors of the 20th century. After completing studies in Düsseldorf, Wilhelm Lehmbruck soon came into contact with the Parisian avant-garde, where his striking style would begin to form. All his life he was occupied with the topic of man, whom the artist stirringly modeled as a solitary figure, working out torso and limbs in an increasingly fragile and prolonged manner. The figures are standing, kneeling, sitting, stumbling or falling and thus become eloquent allegories of human existence in all its aspects.
Wilhelm Lehmbruck was celebrated by critics in his lifetime, his works were shown in innovative exhibitions, among others, the legendary New York Armory Show in 1913. Tragically, the artist committed suicide in 1919 at the young age of 38. Today Wilhelm Lehmbruck's masterpieces can be admired in renownws museums such as the Kunsthalle Mannheim or the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg, the artist's hometown.
