Miguel Ortiz Berrocal
Miguel Ortiz Berrocal counts among the most important Spanish sculptors of the 20th and 21st century. Born in 1933, Miguel Ortiz Berrocal began to make small objects and drawings while he was still a child. He initially planned to study architecture, however, the occupation with geometry finally led him to art and a first exhibition of his works. A scholarship for Italy, where his graphic and sculptural oeuvre would come to full bloom, had the most decisive impact on the young artist's development.
Mathematical principles are still focus and driving power of Miguel Ortiz Berrocal's artistic creation, which also finds realization in his highly aesthetic sculptures that consist of several parts arranged according to a construction plan. At times the observer is asked to participate and to explore the sculptures' structures. Miguel Ortiz Berrocal's trend-setting plastic works were on exhibition at, for instance, the documenta 3 in Kassel.
