Marie Laurencin Marie Laurencin - Biography
The Parisian Marie Laurencin became one of the most renowned artists of Classic Modernism with her drawings, prints, book illustrations and paintings.
After completing the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a quite remarkable achievement for a woman at that time, Marie Laurencin participated in the avant-garde "Salon des Indépendants" as early as in 1905 and soon came into contact with the circles around Guillaume Apollinaire and Pablo Picasso. She also took part in the orphic-cubist "Séction d'Or" (1912) and the world-famous New Yorker "Armory Show" (1913). Even though she was closely linked to Cubism, she had developed her very own style: Her arcadian pictorial worlds with their tender coloring and the both schematic yet elegant composition are populated by stylized and merry mundane-erotic girls.
Works by Marie Laurencin are on display in major museums all over the world.
