Jirí Kolár Jirí Kolár - Biography
Jirí Kolár counts among the most important representatives of Czech avant-garde art. His collages from an early period of creation are strongly characterized by Surrealism, which he made as of the late 1930s. By the late 1950s he had also created a large oeuvre of literary works, which would have decisive impact on the manifold pictorial and graphic means of expression that Jirí Kolár invented in his late period of artistic creation. Among Jirí Kolár's amazing innovations are the "Rollage" and the "Chiasmage", which were made of cut and torn reproductions that he put together again arbitrarily, or the tactile poems, in which lines are punched similar to Braille, thus making them both visible and palpable.
Jirí Kolár, who belonged to innovative artist groups like the "Group 42" or the "Kreuzung", is represented with his works in renowned collections all over the world.
