Jan Sierhuis
Jan Sierhuis counts among the most important contemporary Dutch artists. Jan Sierhuis was around the circle of Amsterdam avant-garde artist from an early point on, where he was in fruitful exchange with artists and poets. The paintings by Jan Sierhuis show the influence of models such as Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh in terms of the expressive coloring, the abstract tendencies and the powerful stroke of the brush. As far as style is concerned, the works by Jan Sierhuis, who preferred to depict the human figure, can be ascribed to a second generation Expressionism, which is, however, taking tendencies to informal art, due to his at times gestural stroke of the brush, which is proof of his contact with the innovative artist group CoBrA and the presentation of his works in exhibitions in the Cobra Museum in Amstelveen.
