Hermann Max Pechstein Hermann Max Pechstein - Biography

The renowned “Brücke” artist Herrmann Max Pechstein definitely counts among Expressionism's big names.
Max Pechstein started out as a decoration painter, he then successfully completed his studies at the Dresden Academy. In 1906 he joined the artists group "Die Brücke", to many he was the group's most gifted artist. In 1912 Max Hermann Pechstein, who always saw himself as an independent artist, left the "Brücke" and made a name for himself as the founding member of the "Novembergruppe". The oeuvre of Hermann Max Pechstein comprises paintings, watercolors and drawings as well as graphic art. In landscapes, nudes, portraits and other topics he put the expressive effects of the colors above the distorted forms. After a journey to the South Seas he developed his art and attained a powerful primitivistic simplification.
The artist, who was defamed by the National Socialists "degenerate" was entirely rehabilitated after 1945, his works are in possession of numerous museums today.
