Heinrich Vogeler Heinrich Vogeler - Biography
Heinrich Vogeler, graphic artist, painter, commercial- and book artist as well as poet, counts among the most important representatives of German Art Nouveau.
Following his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, Heinrich Vogeler settled in Worpswede at the end of the 19th century, where he joined the local artists colony in order to pave the path to Modernism. Heinrich Vogeler at first created symbolist works in the dreamy Art Nouveau aesthetic. The bitter experience gained in World War I made for a change, increased by both private and artistic difficulties, Heinrich Vogeler, the son of a merchant, now became a leading figure in the labor movement, he finally emigrated to Moscow and put his art into the service of Socialism. However, the works made from that point on did not match the fame of his earlier works.
Heinrich Vogeler has already been honored with numerous exhibitions; in 1972 the Worpswede Kunsthalle showed a large retrospective on occasion of his 100th birthday.
