Heinrich Campendonk Heinrich Campendonk - Biography
Heinrich Campendonk counts among the most important representatives of German Expressionism. Born in Krefeld, Heinrich Campendonk studied there at the school of applied arts, before he came into contact with the avant-garde circles around the "Blauer Reiter", which he would soon be part of. After an early period of creation coined by Impressionist and Cubist tendencies, characteristic expressionist elements would soon occur in the oeuvre of Heinrich Campendonk. The artist employed a rich coloring and a abstract repertoire of forms with great poise, making highly expressive compositions. The same accounts for his subtle graphic oeuvre and his numerous designs for glass windows. The later period of creation, however, is dominated by a stricter image concept.
Works by Heinrich Campendonk, defamed as 'degenerate' by the National Socialists, have been shown in the context of large exhibitions, among others, in the Munich Lenbachhaus, and thus deliver poof of the artists prominent rank.
