Georges Rouault Georges Rouault - Biography
Georges Rouault is a main representative of Fauvism, but also an eccentric.
The co-founder of the Paris fall salon showed works together with the Fauvists, however, a direct comparison also points up the differences to his art, which Georges Rouault clearly characterized in "Schrei in der Nacht" [Scream in the Night]: Religious motifs and scenes lined with Christian morals from the milieu of marginal urban groups distinguish Georges Rouault's range of topics. In terms of his style the Parisian also went his own way: Instead of the lucent fauvist palette, Georges Rouault preferred a gloomy spectrum and black, expressive contours jotted down with broad splashes of the brush, which, similar to a stained glass window, border fields of glowing colors. Besides paintings, Georges Rouault also made graphic prints, between 1917 and 1927 he made particularly noteworthy cycles of prints.
Works by Georges Rouault are in possession of the world's greatest museums, such as the Eremitage in St. Petersburg or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
