André Masson André Masson - Biography
André Masson counts among the most outstanding representatives of Surrealism. Born in 1896, the artist would enfold his creative powers in the pulsating art metropolis Paris, where he first stayed in 1912. This is also where he met André Breton and joined his group of surrealists.
Even though André Masson's style at first followed Cubism, he soon took on the "écriture automatique" which had been established by surrealist circles, so that he could express his deepest feelings irrespective of any rationality. As a consequence, he made touching paintings and graphic art, which captured André´Masson's inner life, torn by the experience of war and emigration, in both powerful and ominous images full of crippled bodies, strange objects and uneasy lines.
Among the most important acknowledgements that André Masson and his amazing works received are the participation in the Kassel documenta and the Biennale in Venice as well as numerous exhibitions all around the world.
